Thursday November 19th, 2020. First virtual NY Philharmonic Gala event, hosted from the Lincoln Center Plaza, by Deborah Borda, CEO of the New York Philharmonic.
Greetings friends, and welcome back. It’s been a few months, without a new post from me.
The Performing Arts have been very much on my mind these past months, as for many of you; and like many, I have enjoyed lately, various new ways to make, and listen to “live” music in NYC, sometimes at home, and at times, in NYC’s wonderfully vibrant streets.
Yay!
And today, I wanted to highlight, a particularly wonderful, new, NYC event, offered by the NY Philharmonic, virtually, 48h ago, to music lovers; and featuring fabulous, award winning artists (musicians, writers, actors, journalists) such as: Emanuel Ax, Anderson Cooper, Anthony Roth Costanzo, Katie Couric, Renée Fleming, David Foster, Josh Groban, John Lithgow, Kelli O’Hara, Stephen Sondheim, Emma Thompson, and John Williams.
Wow!
And free until December 1st, 2020.
Yay!
This hour long gala, featured a host of different types of music, as the wonderfully innovative and forward thinking NY Philharmonic, always does: classical, folk and jazz; and today, I just wanted to share four pieces, which particularly resonated with me:

First, of course, let’s listen to the first movement of Beethoven’s “5th symphony”:
It never gets old…
Second, let’s listen to the first few minutes of Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue”, especially when conducted by Bernstein, which evokes immediately New York City for so many of us, and here, is yet, another wonderfully hip version:
Isn’t it incredibly energetic, optimistic and joyful?
Third, let’s listen to the 5th movement, of a piece by Brahms, mentioned in the Gala event, which I adore, his “German requiem”:
So meditative and beautiful…
Lastly, let’s turn once again to jazz music, with “Harlem shake”, an incredible piece, composed by 11 year old Camryn Cowan, which celebrates NYC, in a wonderfully inspired and upbeat way: get ready to be impressed!

I especially love the joyful opening.
Such a great and wonderful tribute to NYC, just like this fun painting, inspired by Van Gogh and the Big Apple, featuring the awesome and iconic, Empire State building.
